 1) größte Stadt in Delaware, USA, am Delaware River, 71 500 Einwohner, die Metropolitan Area hat 120 300 Einwohner; Sitz eines Bischofs der protestantischen Episkopalkirche und eines katholischen Bischofs; Museen; Verwaltungs- und Forschungszentrum von Chemiekonzernen (u. a. Du Pont); Erdölraffinerien, petrochemische, Auto- und Lederindustrie; Hafen.
 
 
Schwedenkirche (1698), Hendrickson House (1690, Museum), Fort Christina Monument (C. Milles).
 
 
1638 von Schweden als Fort Christina gegründet; ab 1655 in niederländischem, ab 1664 in englischem Besitz, entwickelte sich die Stadt, 1731 Willington genannt und 1739 in Wilmington umbenannt, unter den Quäkern zu einem prosperierenden Hafen.
 
 2) Stadt im südöstlichen North Carolina, USA, am Ästuar des Cape Fear River, 55 500 Einwohner; Museen; chemische, Holz verarbeitende, Textil- und Zementindustrie; Seehafen.
 
 
1734 gegründet; 1765 Schauplatz des ersten bewaffneten Widerstands gegen die Stempelakte; im Sezessionskrieg bis zu seiner Einnahme durch die Unionstruppen am 15. 1. 1865 wichtigster Hafen des Südens für Blockadebrecher.
